► Background to NASES

History of NASES

NASES celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year but its routes began before that when the first Job Shop was established.

In order to support students who are working Colleges and Universities have invested in specialist student employment services or Job Shops to help students find work. The first Job Shop opened in 1990 and there has been steady growth ever since, today there are over 120 services in the UK.

As the sector has grown so has the support available for student employment professionals. Initially an organisation called SEDG (the Student Employment Development Group) came about as staff identified a need for a body to take forward the many and varied issues faced by those operating services.

The next stage of development was the establishment of a professional body for the sector - NASES in 1999 (National Association of Student Employment Services) at the conference for student employment in Liverpool. The associations aim is to facilitate the continuing development of the sector, encourage interaction between practitioners, share best practice and represent its membership on a national level. It is uniquely able to represent the Job Shop sector as a whole, regardless of organisational or geographical location; this appreciation of diversity is enshrined within its constitution.

NASES has arisen from the desire of practitioners to share expertise, provide mutual support and participate in national agendas. It incorporates an infrastructure of regional and e-networks, enabling swift and efficient communication with its membership.
As a member organisation NASES developed with volunteer support, in 2002 NASES received funding from the then Department for Education and Skills to manage the SELF Project to develop the student employment sector and establish student employment as a valid source of Work Experience. This provided two staff members and a location at the University of Liverpool.
In October 2004, following its completion, NASES developed a Business Plan to maintain a National Office and continued to employ two staff, a Director and Office Co-ordinator to undertake central office functions at the University of Liverpool. NASES continues the work of the project, supports the executive committee and manages a number of projects. In July 2007 the Association was granted charitable status.

These members are divided into seven areas each managed by a regional representative.  The regions are; Scotland and Northern Ireland; North East; North West; Midlands, London & South East; South West; and Wales.
