► FE Institutions
FE Colleges have a wide variety of students with different kinds of needs from Young People through to Adult Learners and International Students. A growing number of FE colleges have developed student employment services for students, and we are aware of the specific FE needs in the student employment sector.
The 2005 Foster Report hghlighted the need for the FE sector to focus on skills and employability highlighting;
"FE colleges in England contribute more than a third of undergraduate entrants to higher education (indeed they are the main routes for adults and entrants from lower socio-economic groups). They are abolutely essential to the Governments drive on widening participation in Higher Education. We must continue to bring down the walls between FE colleges and universities if we are to open such opportunities to everyone."
If you are considering setting up a service NASES can help you identiy some of the main decisions and issues to consider. It is important to network and find out about different support services available, and have an awareness of employment issues within each group identified above as the Job Shop on campus is open to the whole college community.
NASES can put you in touch will other SES practitioners, ideally those managing a similar type of service, to help you voice any concerns and learn from their experience. You can also visit our service case studies to see some examples, including one from the FE sector.
If you become a NASES member you will gain access to a range of resources found in the members-only sections of our website; regular access to members only email (jiscmail) and our newsletter all of which will aid you in dealing with these issues.
