► Working with job shops

Students work while attending university both to reduce student debt and as a means to develop their own work based skills, the acquisition of work experience has long been a differentiating factor when it comes to graduate employment decisions.  There are many business benefits to student work experience which employers have identified including their availability, attitude, skills for the job and the option to continue their employment after graduation.

All job shops have the common aim to assist students find part time, temporary and vacation employment opportunities that fit in with their academic studies. As well as advertising vacancies Jobs Shops may offer additional recruitment services such as agency temps, direct targeting via email or texts, short-listing, hosting Jobs Fairs or providing interview space. 

 
 Benefits of using a job shop to recruit students
  • Only one point of contact for thousands of potential candidates.

  • A wide range of recruitment services to tap into, often tailored to requirements.

  • Student staff available throughout the year, students can work part time during term time and full time during vacations giving the possibility of retaining staff for three/four full years.

  • Advice, guidance and support throughout the recruitment process

  • Excellent value for money, many services are funded by the university so are completely free.

  • Access to a vast array of talent and professional skills providing excellent student staff who are committed, intelligent and are IT literate.

  •  Try before you buy - opportunity to employ students after graduation.

  Using a job shop

All services will advertise vacancies direct to students, most will display job vacancies on notice-boards or web sites and students can apply to organisations direct. Some job shops will offer additional services, such as short-listing, targeting students via email or text messages, hosting Jobs Fairs throughout the year, supplying temporary agency staff and providing rooms to interview in. In order to pay for their services some Job shops will make minimal charges to cover costs.

 
 How to employ students
  • Make direct links with local job shops with our Job shop listing 

  • Invite Job shop staff to place of employment to give them a better understanding of workplace and roles students will be undertaking

  • Recruit direct on campus – attend on-campus Jobs Fairs or have a stand in the job shop

  • Consider introducing student specific recruitment marketing materials

  • Look at other activity within the Institution that you can link with to raise the organizations profile amongst students eg Sponsor club/society, get involved with academic side (sit of course approval panel, employer liaison panel etc)

  • Work with careers department for links to all aspects of employability

  • Look into the provision of transport if public transport to your location is a problem

  • Review full time induction programmes for part time staff

  • Include all perks and benefits information in recruitment adverts – students love discounts!

 
Getting the best out of students
  • Consider introducing development programmes for student employees to progress to supervisory or trainer roles

  • Ensure students are aware of promotion prospects available to them while studying.

  • Ensure students are aware of opportunities upon graduation

  • Host a student forum at the workplace to generate ideas gain feedback from your student employees to make the workplace more student friendly (ensure students are paid for attending or given something for input!)

  • Introduce flexible working patterns, with appropriate notice time off for exams

  • Introduce a Student newsletter with news and information available for student staff

  • Establish cost of hire to ascertain how valuable it is to retain employees

  • Introduce Vacation Link – to allow students to swap locations during vacation times

  • Consider alternative methods of communication with student employees such as by email or text

  • Introduce recommend a friend scheme

 
 European & International Students

Many Employers are unclear as to the issues affecting the employment of European or International Students, such as can they work without having a permanent National Insurance Number, do International Students require a permit to work, or do students have to register for work while studying in the UK.

Job Shops are ideally placed to answer any enquiries relating to the employment of these student groups and will be able to provide up to date information and guidance on any issues affecting the employment of these student groups.
