► Teaching methods
The Postgraduate certificate and diploma in Management of Student Work Experience are all completed via a blend of residential courses and distance learning. Assessment is based on real world examples and work-based projects. There are opportunities to tailor assignments towards current workplace needs.
It is usual to complete two modules per year, therefore the certificate could be completed within 18 months but candidates have a maximum of three years to complete and the diploma could be completed within three years but candidates have a maximum of five years to complete.
Distance learning
These modules are undertaken individually utilising the University of Reading Blackboard site. These modules comprise readings, activities, exercises and reports. This medium will allow for ‘group discussions’ with others studying the module concurrently and for interaction with the tutor. The additional support of a mentor is available on request from NASES.
To get started on a distance learning module, you should send a completed Module Registration Form to the course administrator at the University of Reading. You will be invoiced by the University of Reading for the module fee and, once payment has been received, you will then be sent the materials.
Residential courses
The residential training element of a number of certificate and diploma modules is designed to provide an intensive learning experience, aid networking and mutual support, and raise motivation and interest.
The process involves:
- Pre-course tasks (4-6 weeks prior to attendance) often involving elements of self-assessment, pre-reading and/or research and possibly analysis of a current work situation.
- The actual residential course (3 days) involving theoretical input and a wide range of exercises to encourage understanding and application, the sharing of experience and practice, and structured reflection. At the end of the residential, individual support is given to participants to help them transfer their learning back to the work place.
- An assessed assignment, generally work-based, which needs to be completed in the 6 months following the residential course.
To start a residential module you must:
- apply to NASES for a place on the course;
- And complete a module registration form for the University of Reading.
Residential courses are held around the UK, either in university accommodation or hotels.
Training teams are made up of student work experience professionals. Trainers are selected on the basis of their expertise in the course content and their ability and experience as trainers. All qualification course trainers have successfully completed a 'Training the Trainers' course accredited by NASES and recognised by the University of Reading. Training teams work closely with the course convenor at Reading in planning and delivering the residential course. The post-course assignment is marked by the Reading convenor.
