Learning through work experience

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  • identify the theories of learning and career development that underpin advice and guidance practice;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the process and a high level of competence in managing a structured advice and guidance interaction which focuses on work experience;
  • enable students to identify the career development learning outcomes of their work experience;
  • manage the referral of students within internal and external networks;
  • evaluate different approaches to delivering curriculum-based career development learning within educational institutions;
  • develop strategies for liaising effectively with academics in relation to curriculum development;
  • review your own professional practice which includes an assessment of your skills and knowledge and your ability to work with others;
  • account for your professional practice in relation to organisational and public policy developments.

The three day residential will cover career development theories, explore the variety of models and frameworks available for working with clients and the skills required. Participants will also role play their interview skills with students and provide peer to peer feedback. Tutorial sessions with the course leader will also be conducted.
