Shrewsbury College ‘benefiting enormously’ from NASES membership

Shrewsbury College has over 6,000 students enrolled on its full time and part time Further and Higher Education courses. The college launched ‘The Agency’ in 2013 as a one-stop-shop for all of its students to access professional careers and employability services which include:

•    Online and Job Centre-style Student Job Shop

•    Employability services including support with job searches, CV writing, applications and interview skills

•    Work Experience

•    Volunteering

•    Enrichment and professional development opportunities

•    Matrix accredited Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance

Shrewsbury College has been a member of NASES since February 2014. They joined as a result of having a matrix-accredited Careers service and wanted to professionalise their employability offer as part of their services to students. As a result of NASES membership, the college has launched a Student Job Shop, as well as developing a Volunteering Scheme.  Through the NASES regional meetings, they were able to visit a number of Student Job Shops which helped in the design of their Enterprise Centre where the Agency is based.

Karen Hayward the Agency manager feels that both she and the college have benefitted enormously from being part of NASES.

“It provides students confidence that they are accessing professional services and employers appreciate that we are part of a nationally-recognised network and are able to tap into a talent pool of over 6,000 potential applicants. The networking opportunities and depth and breadth of NASES members’ knowledge are superb.  NASES members are supportive and proactive through the JISCmail facility and share good practice as well as answering queries or providing support to members.

From a personal perspective, I have recently joined the NASES executive team as I feel the FE sector has much to benefit from joining the NASES network.”

The college has also participated in and benefited from a number of NASES events including Autumn Summit and NASES Annual Conference, as well as regional meetings.

“Each time I attend a NASES event, I come away with a clutch of new contacts as well as tips for improving our service for students.  The strong input from international, national and local employers means we are kept abreast of the latest student recruitment trends and selection processes, which in turn means NASES members are well-informed in supporting their students.”    (Karen Hayward The Agency Manager)

Being a member of NASES has clearly benefitted both students and staff at Shrewsbury College. As highlighted by Karen:

“NASES provides a very cost-effective way of allowing FE institutions to tap into an experienced network of student employability professionals.  Employability is an increasingly important aspect of the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework, and it supports evidencing elements of the framework such as: ‘Effectiveness of leadership and management’ and ‘Personal development, behaviour and welfare’ I would highly recommend that any FE organisation that is serious about developing their students’ employment service join NASES
