What is NASES?

Morethanwork is the student facing site of the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES). Set up in 1999 as the professional body supporting student employment services/job shops (departments set up to help students find and get the most out of their part-time, temporary and vacation work) NASES aims to facilitate the development of the student employment sector, encourage networking, share best practice and represent our membership on a national level.

We are a registered charity (number 1119884) with the following objectives:

To advance the education and relieve the needs of students in Further and Higher Education by providing and assisting in the provision of employment opportunities during their studies, in particular, but not exclusively by:

  • raising student employment issues of significance nationally to students and consulting with, advice, and informing national, regional, and local decision makers on student employment all related areas;
  • establishing a national training programme for student employment practitioners;
  • establishing standards of good practice for student employment practitioners;
  • acting as a focus for the exchange of information with all agencies, organisations and institutions engaged in providing student employment opportunities and related skills / developmental projects;
  • Supporting research activities in the field of student employment.

NASES operates from a national office, based at the University of Wolverhampton. We run a number of campaigns throughout the year including:

  • morethanwork month - October;
  • National Student Employment Week (NSEW) - February;
  • Student Employee of the Year Awards - January to July.

What is a job shop?

Job shops, or student employment services, are the people on campus who will help you to find part-time work while you're studying. You'll find them in many different places: some are in the students' union, some are in careers departments, some are in student services. Wherever they are they'll be able to help you. Depending on the kind of service your college or uni operates you may be able to:

  • join the on or off campus agency or temp bank;
  • use the job advertising board to find part-time work in your area;
  • get advice on how to apply for work including CV writing, how to present yourself, do's and don'ts of social media and much more;
  • you may also be able to link the work you do in your spare time with an award scheme that gives you credit for the skills you gain through part-time or temporary working.

However, chances are that the job shop will be looking to find you. Visit their stands at freshers events and find out more. To find your local job shop click the map on the right.
